INTERNATIONAL EXPERTS RELEASE TSUNAMI RECOVERY REPORT TO HELP COUNTRIES RECOVER FROM DECEMBER 26, 2004 EVENT

HONOLULU, HI, December 22, 2005 --/WORLD-WIRE/--
As the one year anniversary of the Indian Ocean tsunami approaches, an international group of experts have released an expedited multidisciplinary report to help countries recover from the devastating tsunami.

The report, entitled "Mitigating the Risk from Coastal Hazards: Strategies & Concepts for Recovery from the December 26, 2004 Tsunami," is one of the first to develop a comprehensive strategy for redevelopment and recovery that incorporates much of the initial research, reconnaissance and field work from the tsunami.

The report combines the disciplines of geology, engineering, architecture, planning and law to develop technical measures for hazard risk reduction covering everything from where to locate buildings, to construction methods and evacuation.

The report provides a method for identifying hazard zones and gives related strategies and options for recovery. The strategies are then adjusted for anticipated frequency of similar events. Examples are given, as well as a case history that combines the various concepts.

The authors believe that the measures in the report will help affected countries recover faster and with protections from future natural disasters.

According to Dennis Hwang, one of the report authors and costal hazard mitigation expert, "The report takes a flexible approach introducing concepts that allow each country to overlay their own social, cultural, political and economic needs to the hazard mitigation measures presented."

The report is available for download from the following website: http://www.soest.hawaii.edu/SEAGRANT/communication/pdf/TsunamiRecoveryReport.pdf.
