WASHINGTON, DC, September 17, 2004 --/WORLD-WIRE/--
The Environment News Service (ENS) is proud to announce that our report "Ranking Scientists Warn Bush Science Policy Lacks Integrity" has been chosen as #3 in Project Censored's Top 25 Censored Media Stories of 2003-2004.

logo Project Censored at Sonoma State University in California has just released its annual list of the most important news stories not covered by the corporate media in the United States. The Environment News Service story on censorship of scientists and manipulation of scientific data was chosen from hundreds of stories submitted to Project Censored by journalists, scholars, librarians, and concerned citizens around the world.

Written by Environment News Service founding Editor-in-Chief, Sunny Lewis, the report documents case after case in which scientific input to policymaking is being censored and distorted by officials in the Bush administration and by the White House.

The award-winning report focuses on a statement issued by more than 60 of the nation's top scientists, including 20 Nobel laureates, leading medical experts, and former federal agency directors, as well as university chairs and presidents. They are calling for regulatory and legislative action to "restore scientific integrity to federal policymaking."

They say President George W. Bush has suppressed and distorted scientific analysis from federal agencies, subjected government scientists to "censorship and political oversight," and taken actions that have undermined the quality of scientific advisory panels.

"Across a broad range of issues, the administration has undermined the quality of the scientific advisory system and the morale of the government's outstanding scientific personnel," said Dr. Kurt Gottfried, emeritus professor of physics at Cornell University and chairman of the Union of Concerned Scientists. "Whether the issue is lead paint, clean air or climate change, this behavior has serious consequences for all Americans."

The report quotes Russell Train, head of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency under Presidents Nixon and Ford. "Science, to quote President Bush's father, the former president, relies on freedom of inquiry and objectivity," said Train. "But this administration has obstructed that freedom and distorted that objectivity in ways that were unheard of in any previous administration."

Commenting on the Project Censored choice of her report, Lewis said, "The free and uncensored flow of scientific information is an important component of policymaking in a democratic society. Manipulation or denial of scientific evidence puts the world at greater risk of global warming, chemical contamination and water scarcity."
