SAS Airlines Provides Flight Service to UN Climate Summit

SAS LOGO STOCKHOLM, Sweden December 10, 2009 --/WORLD-WIRE/-- After a public call for tender, SAS has won the right to provide ”flight service” to Copenhagen in connection with the United Nations’ climate summit, COP15 (”conference of parties meeting number 15”), in the period December 6th – 20th.

More than 15,000 participants are expected to participate in the conference and at the same time, there will be a long series of events in relation to the conference. Many will fly to Copenhagen with SAS.

”COP15-sponsorship must help to clarify SAS’ active role in efforts to reduce environmental impacts. We are well under way with our fuel-saving program, green approaches and the establishment of the environmental management system ISO 14001. And our commitment to the international cooperation is important to achieve global solutions for aviation” says Martin Porsgaard, Environmental Manager .

The sponsorship means that SAS shall make a number of the benefits available to COP15-delegate in relation to travel to and from Copenhagen, including enlarged information, additional staff, facilities for Foreign affairs staff accompanying delegates, in-flight information, access to SAS lounge and Fast-track etc. in the period December 6th to 20th.

”COP15 will become the largest international political conference ever held on Danish ground. Denmark's role as nation country is to ensure a good negotiating climate for the delegates, in particular by ensuring that the delegates feel well treated upon arrival and departure. The sponsorship with SAS is an important element in this effort. We are also very pleased that the service, which SAS offers the delegates, contains a number of environmentally-friendly actions”, says svend Olling, Head of Logistics Division in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

With the agreement will SAS achieve a unique opportunity to show that we are an active part in such a large and important event. The sponsorship is in the continuation of Mats Janssons participation at the UN’S climate summit in New York on September 22nd.

SAS has an ambitious environmental program, which comprises the technical and traffic CO2-objectives, recommendations to the political decision-makers and training programs, which aim to create understanding for the environment among employees and other stakeholders. All SAS’ own business travel is CO2 compensated, which is also an opt our customers can make.

Although aviation worldwide, only account for about two per cent of total CO2 emissions and in the Scandinavian countries between one and one and a half a percentage, it is important that we take responsibility for our part. This year, SAS has taken the initiative to bring together the whole aviation sector, including IATA’s top management, on the World Business Summit May 24th-26th in the Bella Centre. Here it was agreed that the aviation industry should be included in an international agreement on climate effort, and that there must be a global system for regulating aviation climate, in particular to counteract further distortions of competition. These objectives have now passed as recommendations to COP15.

In addition to the international cooperation SAS has launched own environmental targets:

Principal strategic targets
  • 20% lower emissions by 2020 with traffic growth included
  • 50% lower emissions per unit produced by 2020.
Goals for 2008–2011
  • SAS aims to: -be seen as the most environment-conscious airline in Europe
  • have certified environmental management systems in accordance with ISO 14001
  • have the industry’s most effective fuel saving program
  • be among the first airlines to use alternative fuel once they are approved and commercially available
  • have a long-term plan for its aircraft fleet that leads to a significant reduction of greenhouse emissions
