FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE DR. DEEPAK CHOPRA SPEAKS OUT ON BC'S CONTROVERSIAL TROPHY BEAR HUNT |
Spring bear hunt begins in Canada's Great Bear Rainforest
VANCOUVER, B.C., CANADA, APRIL 15, 2009 --/WORLD-WIRE/-- Today, Dr. Deepak Chopra, a man that Time magazine heralds as one of the top 100 heroes and icons of the century describes BC's bear hunt as "...a senseless sport."
"It's cruel. It's senseless. It's vulgar." Is how Dr. Chopra describes the trophy hunt in Canada's Great Bear Rainforest in a video on the conservation group Pacific Wild's web site. "To have a trophy in your house that shows the dead body of a grizzly bear... how obscene can that be in our modern age?" Dr. Chopra strongly condemns the practice of killing BC's threatened grizzly bears for sport. This interview follows up on an open letter co-authored by Dr. Chopra and twelve year old Vancouver student Kali Brauckmann. The letter appeared in a full-page ad in one of B.C.'s major daily newspapers urging Premier Gordon Campbell to ban the sport hunt of bears in the Great Bear Rainforest. "Regardless of what you do, remember this: one day it will be illegal to kill grizzlies for fun. We will look back on the grizzly bear in the same light we now look at the killing of whales in BC waters. Future generations will only wonder how it was possible that we killed them for fun." PACIFIC WILD is a not for profit conservation organization dedicated to the protection of British Columbia's wilderness and wildlife.
