FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM GREENING EVENTS Local governments implementing sustainability principles as hosts of international events FREIBURG, Germany, July 27, 2004 --/WORLD-WIRE/-- The City of Barcelona and ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability are organising the symposium on "Greening Events", to be held in Barcelona, Spain 19-21 September 2004, with the political endorsement of the United Nations Environmental Programme, and IUCN - The World Conservation Union. The "Greening Events Symposium" will be the first occasion for cities and their partners to exchange ideas on applying sustainability principles as hosts of international and large-scale events. Main "Greening events" objectives are using as few natural resources as possible, avoidance or reduction of waste to a minimum, to minimise environmental impact and avoid any disruption to the local community. It forms a contribution to a wider effort around "production and consumption". During the symposium, participants can exchange and learn from experiences other cities have had on greening events. These experiences range from the organisation of major international events such as the Olympic Games, to World Expositions and Football World Cups. The symposium will allow ample opportunity to meet international event organisers, "green" suppliers and event sponsors. The Environmental management systems of the Olympic Winter Games Torino 2006, as well as the Monitoring and evaluation tools of the World Summit 2002 are some of the examples that will be presented. Other issues on the agenda include waste reduction, energy consumption and the offset of carbon emissions.
