Quantum Shift TV has proposed a government policy that could reduce greenhouse emissions by 10% to 20%. In a short video addressed to President Bush, Prime Minister Harper and Prime Minister Blair, organic farmer Percy Schmeiser lays out the case. Shifting existing agricultural subsidies to support sustainable farming practices could annually sequester millions of tons of CO2 from the atmosphere by storing more carbon in the soil. (597 million for the USA, 152 million for Canada and 56 million for the UK)

"If we farmers can do our important bit to solve global warming and at the same time improve people’s health, we want to do that," says Schmeiser.

Research by the U.S.-based Rodale Institute found that sustainable no-till-farmed soil with winter cover crops holds up to 30% more carbon than conventional agriculture. In turn the extra carbon in the soil increases food nutrients, which could reduce healthcare costs by billions. Crop yields were not affected and showed more resistance to unpredictable weather patterns.
