RECENT HEAT WAVE, TRAGIC DEATHS, RECORD ENERGY DEMANDS - CAN TREES BE THE ANSWER?

Prepared by the USDA Forest Service, Pacific Southwest Research Station, Center for Urban Forest Research and based on recent research findings

DAVIS, CA, August 10, 2006 --/WORLD-WIRE/--
If Californians establish 50 million new trees in strategic locations - two trees on the west and one tree on the east side of residential buildings - in 15 years the annual energy savings from the cooler temperatures these new shade trees provide will be approximately 6,100 GWH.

This means that at least seven 100-MW power plants will not have to be built, enough power for 683,000 homes and 1.7 million people. California utilities will save $462 million annually in wholesale electricity purchases and generation costs.

Residents will save $1 billion in annual retail energy costs for air conditioning in addition to the savings from existing trees. Peak-load demand will be reduced 9 percent, thereby reducing the need to purchase costly peak power. And the impact of high temperatures and air pollution on human health will be lessened.
