NON-ROAD ENGINE CLEANUP GOOD NEWS FOR PUBLIC HEALTH WASHINGTON, May 14, 2004 --/WORLD-WIRE/-- New federal standards for cleaning up non-road diesel engines and fuel will save lives and improve public health, REP America, the national grassroots organization of Republicans for environmental protection, said today. "Fine particles and smog caused by diesel emissions result in lung damage, asthma attacks, and thousands of premature deaths every year," REP America Policy Director Jim DiPeso said. "The Environmental Protection Agency's new rules will reduce unhealthy emissions from earth-movers, farm equipment, and other non-road diesel engines by more than 90 percent." A proposed EPA rule cutting emissions from locomotive and marine vessel engines will provide further public health protection. "EPA is doing great work cleaning up heavy-duty, diesel-powered transportation equipment that supplies many essential services. We would like to see EPA take an equally aggressive approach towards cutting smog-forming pollutants and mercury emissions from power plants. All Americans will be able to breathe easier as a result," DiPeso said.
