MEDIA ADVISORY AMERICAN LUNG ASSOCIATION MARKS CLEAN AIR MONTH IN MAY Motor Vehicles are Single Largest Source of Air Pollution Editors: Vehicle pollution control experts available for interviews; Vehicle Pollution Fact Sheet available The American Lung Association concludes in its 2005 State of the Air report that half of Americans - 152 million people - breathe dirty air, polluted with ozone - or smog. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), motor vehicles are a major source of air pollution - in many cases, greater than all of a region's dirtiest factories and smokestacks combined. Pollutants in motor vehicle exhaust cook in heat and sunlight to create ozone, the major ingredient in smog. Ozone sears the lungs and can permanently damage the respiratory system, cause heart and lung disease, and harm the body's defenses against infection and disease. Ozone sends people to hospital emergency rooms and causes premature deaths. It aggravates and can even cause asthma in children. Some researchers have linked high levels of vehicle exhaust to childhood leukemia. According to the EPA, 40 to 70 percent of cancer-causing air toxics come from motor vehicles. Motor vehicles are also the leading source of carbon monoxide, generating between 60% and 95% of this invisible, airborne poisonous gas. The American Lung Association has concluded that "vehicle inspection programs are a valuable tool for the improvement of air quality, delivering meaningful reductions of both of air toxics and pollutants that harm both the environment and human health."
