FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE STONYFIELD FARM & NATIVE ENERGY PARTNERSHIP PUTTING A LID ON GLOBAL WARMING World's leading organic yogurt maker shows consumers how to take action, help build new wind farms. LONDONDERRY, NH, April 14, 2005 --/WORLD-WIRE/-- This Earth Day, over 5 million yogurt lids will encourage consumers to fight global warming, as a result of a Stonyfield Farm yogurt national lid campaign that launches this week. The yogurt lids are part of Stonyfield's partnership with NativeEnergy, and the goal of the program is to demonstrate to consumers how they can help fight global warming. Stonyfield Farm, which has a long history of environmental stewardship, has purchased Renewable Energy Certificates, or "Green Tags," from NativeEnergy that provide up-front financing for new wind projects. These investments have supported the Rosebud Sioux Tribe wind turbine, the first Native American-owned and operated commercial-scale wind project. This wind turbine now generates electricity that would otherwise have to come from polluting power facilities on the regional grid, preventing carbon dioxide (CO2), a leading cause of global warming, from entering the air. Stonyfield Farm's Green Tag purchases from NativeEnergy have offset the CO2 emissions from its facility energy use and prevented the release of more than 18,000 tons of CO2 pollution from energy use. This has the same global warming impact as taking 3,000 cars off the road for an entire year. Now Stonyfield has decided to take the campaign to the consumer. Featuring the tag line "Eat a Few Ounces…Take Off a Few Tons!" the yogurt lids encourage consumers to follow the company's lead in the fight against global warming. Consumers are directed to Stonyfield's web site, where they will find information and options for taking personal action, including offsetting their business or household energy-related CO2 with NativeEnergy. "Protecting the planet is part of our mission at Stonyfield, says Gary Hirshberg, CE-Yo of Stonyfield Farm. "I know that you can do good business while doing a better job to preserve the earth. This lid and website will help consumers make some simple changes that will help reduce global warming. We only have one planet - it's our job to protect it for the next generation." Tom Boucher, NativeEnergy's CEO, is excited about the positive effects the new lid campaign and educational outreach will have on new renewable energy projects and on the environment. "Consumers want to learn more about what they can do to be good stewards of the environment, and Stonyfield Farm is making it easier for them to be part of the solution," he says. Through increasing efficiency, since 1996 Stonyfield Farm has saved over $1.6 million and the equivalent of 36 million kilowatt hours of electricity, which is enough energy to power 3,500 homes for a year, while preventing over 13,000 tons of CO2 from entering the atmosphere. In 1997, Stonyfield Farm became the first U.S. manufacturer to offset 100% of its CO2 emissions from its facility energy use. Through its annual CO2 offset program, since 1997 Stonyfield Farm has prevented the release of a total of over 30,000 tons of CO2. About Stonyfield Farm Stonyfield Farm, celebrating its 22nd year, is the world's largest organic yogurt manufacturer with all natural and certified organic yogurt, yogurt smoothies, cultured soy, frozen yogurt and ice cream distributed in all 50 states. It is the nation's first dairy processor to pay farmers not to treat cows with the synthetic bovine growth hormone rBGH.
