FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NEVADA DESERT EXPERIENCE INVITATION TO SPEAKING FROM THE HEART & HOLY WEEK PEACE WALK

LAS VEGAS, NV, March 23, 2006 --/WORLD-WIRE/--
The Nevada Desert Experience invites everyone to join two upcoming events: Speaking from the Heart: Testimony & Healing in the Desert, March 30 - April 2, 2006 in Las Vegas, Nevada and at the Nevada Test Site, and the Holy Week Peace Walk, April 9 - April 14, 2006.

SPEAKING FROM THE HEART addresses: How do we create peace within ourselves and in the world? How do we speak to those with whom we disagree? How do we communicate across our social, political, religious and economic differences? What does it mean to integrate nonviolence in every relationship in our lives?

You are invited to explore answers to these questions in a meeting of those whose lives have been significantly marked by the nuclear age: those who survived the bombing of Hiroshima, who lived downwind of the Nevada Test Site, who worked in the nuclear industry, who were employed at the Nevada Test Site and those who opposed nuclear testing.

Share your journey in nonviolence with others who have sought alternative ways of resolving conflicts. By receiving each other with open hearts, we will connect compassionately with the humanity of everyone's choices as a way to create the peace we seek.

Speakers include:
  • Takashi “Thomas” Tanemori, a survivor (hibakusha) of the Hiroshima atomic bomb and founder of the Silkworm Peace Institute;
  • Bob Nelson, Episcopal Priest and former Manager for Test and Operations at the Department of Energy;
  • Claudia Peterson, resident of St. George, Utah who lost her daughter and sister to cancer from living “downwind” of the Nevada Test Site;
  • Steve Kelly, Jesuit priest and ploughshares activist, one of 19 arrested at the NTS on Good Friday during the first Lenten Desert Experience;
  • Jay Norman, Deputy Manager for Test and Operations at the Department of Energy's Nevada Operations Office;
  • Katherine Blossom, Western Shoshone Traditional Elder and recipient of the “Elder of the Year” award in 2001;
  • Michael May, former Director of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory;
  • Anne Symens-Bucher, a co-founder of Nevada Desert Experience;
  • Hozan Alan Senauke, head of practice at the Berkeley Zen Center in California;
  • Fred Sly, certified trainer of Nonviolent Communication, will facilitate the weekend.
Admission to SPEAKING FROM THE HEART is $120 - $90 (sliding scale) including meals. No one will be turned away for lack of funds.

HOLY WEEK PEACE WALK - April 9 - April 14, 2006

Our annual pilgrimage from Las Vegas to the Nevada Test Site will begin on Sunday, April 9 in Las Vegas and conclude at the gates of the test site on April 14, Good Friday. During the walk, we will honor and celebrate the many interfaith religious holidays taking place that week including Buddha’s birthday, Passover, Holy Week, Mohammed’s birthday and a full moon. The Peace Walk will include community-building activities, camping, song, prayer, a peace and justice Seder dinner and the Nuclear Stations of the Cross.

A walk-a-thon fundraiser for Nevada Desert Experience, participants will be sponsored for “a-dollar-a-mile” during the 65-mile walk. To pledge a walker - even if you do not know someone who is walking - please send your donations to:
