SEA SHEPHERD AND SEAL DEFENDERS TAKE TO THE STREETS
FRIDAY HARBOR, WA, March 13, 2006 --/WORLD-WIRE/-- On March 15th, which is the traditional start date of the Canadian seal slaughter, seal defenders will take to the streets all around the world to protest the killing of seals in Canada. Sea Shepherd Conservation Society is sponsoring an International Day of Action for the Seals to protest against the annual slaughter of baby seals on the Eastern Coast of Canada.
Captain Paul Watson will be participating in the protest this Wednesday at the Canadian Consulate in Los Angeles. Available at the LA Protest: A video highlights reel with recent footage of the hunt, Sea Shepherd's ship and crew in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, interviews and sound bites by Captain Watson, and historical Sea Shepherd campaign footage of 30 years' efforts to save the seals.
Paul McCartney is not the only celebrity speaking out on this issue. In Cape Town, South Africa, the crew of the Sea Shepherd flagship Farley Mowat will be joined by Hollywood actor Rutger Hauer in a protest before the Canadian Consulate. Mr. Hauer is a member of the Sea Shepherd Advisory Board and he is presently making a movie in South Africa. [Pictures of Mr. Hauer and crew available upon request]
There will be demonstrations in cities across Canada and the United States, Australia, South Africa, Croatia, Hungary, France, Germany, the U.K., and Russia among many other nations.
The movement against the annual slaughter of hundreds of thousands of seal pups is growing and March 15th is the day for international voices to rise together to demand that Canada put an end to this obscenity of cruelty, blood, and waste. Canada has not yet announced the start date of the hunt or the quota due to late-forming ice. In the prior three years, Canada killed over one million seals.
Sea Shepherd Conservation Society is fighting this mass slaughter of seal in the courts, on the ice, in the streets, in the media, and by promoting the Boycott of Canadian Seafood.
"This movement is growing," said Captain Paul Watson, the Founder and President of Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. "Already we have cost Canada more in losses in seafood sales than the nation profits from sealing. That is a language government and industry can both understand. We will keep the losses higher than the profits until this horrifically cruel mass slaughter of seal pups is ended."
