FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE FORTRANS' NEW SYSTEM SOLVES PROCESS WATER PROBLEM FOR CONCRETE INDUSTRY WENDELL, NC, February 13, 2006 --/WORLD-WIRE/-- Fortrans Inc. announces a new self-contained pH control and monitoring system designed to neutralize high pH process water produced at ready mixed concrete plants. The Model 5000S pH Control & Monitoring System offers precise monitoring and pH control of process water in settling basins, lagoons and other outfall containment devices. Permits must be obtained from the local governing agency to allow any discharge of process water to the environment. When concrete plants do not treat their process water, the high pH water may end up in streams and waterways, where it is toxic to aquatic life. The Fortrans unique system can help ready mixed concrete operators meet the state standards for process water discharge in a cost-effective way. The Fortrans pH Control & Monitoring Systems are designed to treat and maintain a specified pH level in a body of water, usually 100,000 gallons or less, to allow the permitted discharge of treated water to the environment. The system will treat approximately 75,000 gallons over a 24 hour period. The treated water may be used to batch concrete, to irrigate rock, to rinse the interiors of the drums on the concrete trucks and rinse the exteriors of the trucks as well. Satisfied Fortrans customers like Jeff Lamm, manager of environmental and land resources for Southern Concrete Materials headquartered in Asheville, North Carolina, are planning to buy additional systems. "We are Currently using 5 of the Model 5000S pH control systems supplied by Fortrans at our ready mixed concrete plants and are very pleased with them," Lamm says. "In fact, they are not only helping us control the pH in our pit systems but also help us deal with the solids build-up as well. They are reliable and virtually maintenance free and offer one of the best methods that I have found in dealing with high pH process water, which is one of the most critical and increasingly regulated issues in our industry. We currently operate 30 plants and I intend to purchase several more Model 5000S systems." Fortrans pH Control & Monitoring System units are cost-competitive with custom designed systems, and in fact, engineering firms offer Fortrans systems to their customers. The units are shipped fully assembled and only require an electrical connection and a supply of carbon dioxide gas. The system will treat approximately 75,000 gallons over a 24 hour period. The system is also available as a skid mounted unit, the Model 5000SK. These systems are highly reliable and affordable to purchase and operate. They have been certified by an independent engineering firm to operate as advertised. Fortrans Inc. was founded in 1996 as a manufacturer of environmentally safe, low toxicity specialty cleaning chemicals. Fortrans chemicals are environmentally safe, have low toxicity, and are formulated to meet the specialty needs of cleaners for the toughest applications while being safe and biodegradable. Concrete contains alkalis with sodium, magnesium and calcium compounds. When a phosphoric acid solution is used in cleaning, the reaction forms weak soluble phosphates which cannot be removed by settling basins. Most U.S. cities now require phosphate removal before treated water can be returned to rivers and streams. The answer to these water quality problems is to use cleaning products that do not contain chlorine compounds or phosphorus such as Fortrans' Mortarman Concrete Remover™ and the truck and cab washes Mortarman Safe Soap™ and Safe Soap II with Wax.™ These products do not contain chlorine, phosphorus or other raw materials which could form toxic compounds or furnish nutrients to the environment. Fortrans Inc. offers environmental solutions to the ready mixed concrete industry with our line of innovative chemicals and pH control systems. The Mortarman™ products are efficient cleaners that biodegrade to carbon dioxide and water, unlike competitive products that contain hydrochloric or phosphoric acids.
