FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ROBERT F. KENNEDY JR. CALLS FOR NEW ENERGY FOR AMERICA ASPEN, Colorado, January 25, 2005 --/WORLD-WIRE/-- Environmental attorney and author Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will give a free, public lecture at the Wheeler Opera House in Aspen on Friday, January 28 at 5:30. His talk, titled “Breaking Free to a New Energy Economy: The Politics and Potential for Change,” was made possible by Aspen Skiing Company and the Natural Resources Defense Council in partnership with the Wheeler Opera House Community Series. Kennedy, who is senior attorney for the Natural Resources Defense Council and president of the Waterkeeper Alliance, recently published his latest book: Crimes Against Nature : How George W. Bush and His Corporate Pals Are Plundering the Country and Hijacking Our Democracy. His Rolling Stone article on the same subject is posted at http://truthout.org/docs_03/112103C.shtml. In his talk, Kennedy will argue that America is at a crossroads between investment in 19th century polluting industries or in 21st century technologies and energy sources that will reduce our oil dependence, fight global warming, and put America’s companies back in the lead. Dr. Daniel Lashof, Science Director of the NRDC Climate Center, will also be on hand to discuss the political challenges and technology potential to change America's energy and economic future. RFK Jr. is credited with leading the fight to protect New York City's water supply, but his reputation as a resolute defender of the environment stems from a litany of successful legal actions. The list includes winning numerous settlements for Riverkeeper, prosecuting governments and companies for polluting the Hudson River and Long Island Sound, arguing cases to expand citizen access to the shoreline, and suing treatment plants to force compliance with the Clean Water Act. The New York City watershed agreement, which he negotiated on behalf of environmentalists and the city's watershed consumers, is regarded as an international model in stakeholder consensus negotiations and sustainable development. He helped lead the fight to turn back aggressive anti-environmental legislation during the 104th Congress. RFK’s talk evolved out of a partnership between Aspen Skiing Company and the Natural Resources Defense Council established to mobilize the public to take action on climate change. The event was timed to coincide with X-Games in an effort to reach a broad audience. Tickets are free but should be picked up in advance, as the event is likely to sell out.
